About a year ago, I came across a very small book entitled “28 Paradises”, consisting of 28 paintings by Dominique Zerfuss (b. 1951). Each painting is accompanied by a poem written by Patrick Modiano, her husband (b. 1945) (Nobel Prize in Literature, 2014). 5 sets from these 28, at times rather enigmatic, painting/poems became a beginning point of my work “Many Paradises”.

From “28 Paradises”
by Patrick Modiano

  1. And the roses growing without thorns
  2. I had lived my life
I no longer cared about the past
    Even less about the future
  3. Meet me at the lakeshore
    At sunrise
You will find once more what you’ve lost
  4. A voice murmured in my ear
    Look down there
    The castle and the waterfall
    If you cross the field
    You will hear
    The musics of silence
  5. The large window looked out over the carousel of the king’s stables
And onto the clock always showing the same time
That of youth and eternal noon
    During the day
    The Lilliputian painted her paradises
    And I
    Next to her
    Wrote a poem

“And the roses growing without thorns” – this one sentence, in particular, changed my attitude towards the world and made me hear new sounds that I’d never imagined before.

This work was composed with the generous support of the Elaine and Richard Fohr Foundation.

I’ve spent much of the year 2022 writing a series of 5 pieces called “From Korea to America – 120 Years and Beyond” for clarinet in B flat, violin, viola, cello, sanjo kayageum/25 string kayageum, and piano). These 5 pieces were inspired by my interviews with 5 long-time friends who’ve come from Korea and have lived in California. The 5 pieces are titled: I. On a Cargo Ship, II. The Flow, III. While Crossing, IV. Happiness Piece, and V. Turning-Point.

“On a Cargo Ship” was inspired by a friend who came to the US on a cargo ship instead of in an airplane many decades ago. She’s become very successful as a pharmacist and has given big donations to a Korean university at which she’d been educated before coming to the US.

I began to imagine the beginning of “The Flow” while listening to a friend’s talking about her life in California as a hard working and kind neighbor.

A long-time college professor in Korea in her 50s came to the US and began a business. “While Crossing” the Pacific Ocean, my friend and her husband promised to begin over fresh in the US. They’ve become successful with their business and are now comfortably retired.

Educated as a pianist in Korea, this friend became a banker in the US. She and her husband achieved their American dream and have led a very happy life together. “Happiness Piece” came to me as I was happily listening to her story.

One of my friends came to the US when she was 3 months old as an adoptee of an American family. She didn’t have much contact with other Koreans until she moved to Northern California where she first heard traditional music from Korea. That Korean music strengthened her identity as a Korean American. She’s now a professor of music. While listening to her talking about her passion for Korean music, I thought of the last section of “Turning-Point”.

I composed this series of 5 pieces with generous support from the San Francisco Artist Grant.

Introduction of Duccio Bianchi

His inclination for Alexander Scriabin’s music led him, 150 years after his birth, to work on these guitar transcriptions of some original piano works.

In addition to the sonatas, the short forms (preludes, studies, pieces of various genres) accompanied Scriabin’s compositional work throughout his life, forming a very conspicuous and varied corpus.

His choice is the result of a careful selection and was oriented towards those pieces of music that seemed to him more idiomatic; it was necessary to change the key to make the most of the sound of the guitar and its extension.
If in this operation, in some cases, a certain density has to be renounced, you can nevertheless
gain in color and turn a look at these compositions from another perspective.

Two Nocturnes for Bassoon & Piano from Philip Rugel

Instrumentation : Bassoon, Piano
Price : 11,60 €
Order-# : 2022091800

This composition for bassoon and piano called Two Nocturnes runs about 10 minutes. It is not technically demanding as far as finger work but it does cover the full range of the instrument so it is not recommended for beginners. It is a very lyrical piece and is good for showing off beautiful melodic playing.

To the Ice Mountains from Hyo-shin Na

I began to imagine this piece while I was reading Franz Kafka’s short story The Bucket Rider: “Coal all spent; the bucket empty; the shovel useless; the stove breathing out cold; the room freezing…”

The narrator is desperate to survive the winter and must beg the coal dealer to give him just a shovelful of coal. How does he get to the coal dealer’s cellar? He rides his bucket, and floats high above the coal dealer sitting at his table. But the coal dealer’s wife takes over and waves her apron, wafting the narrator away as he shouts insults at her. “And with that I ascend into the regions of the ice mountains and am lost forever.”

To the Ice Mountains was commissioned by Earplay.
